How to Choose an Affiliate Program

Although having your own product to sell will produce the greatest profits, selling products for other companies can also generate a lucrative income. If you already have your own website selling your own product, adding additional income sources to it can also help your visitors get more value from your existing website.

With so many affiliate programs available, with more getting started online every day, how do you choose one that is right for you?

Getting involved with too many affiliate programs will only divide your time between them so much that none of them will really pay off for you. I know first hand how that works because I have been there. I tried offering something for everyone. That can be a straight path to disappointment.

Start with one affiliate program, work it to the point where it is generating a nice residual income for you, then add another affiliate program to generate a additional income stream. Continue with that process until you have a comfortable lifestyle or at least have reached your goals. You did set goals before you started on your venture, right?

The answer will be determined by what you want. Do you mind getting paid one time only for each sale? Or do you want residual income, where the customers are assigned to you and generate commissions with all future purchases? Knowing that, you can then start thinking about what topics you are interested in. What do you enjoy doing? What hobbies do you have? If you do not find an area that you are already knowledgeable in, what would you like to learn?

If you like interacting with other people, what type of interaction do you enjoy? Would it be verbally, as in on the phone or in person? Or do you prefer writing to them instead through email, such as mailing lists, blogs, or discussion forums?

In general, you want to look for a unique product in a market that is positoned for growth. Programs that have growth potential with an expanding product offering will improve your potential for future.

Next you want to maximize your pay rate. The higher the pay rate, the less traffic will be necessary to meet your income goals. Programs that offer small commissions can put more of a burden on you to drive more targeted traffic to generate the income. Since there is such a wide range of commission rates among affiliate programs, look for programs that offer higher commission rates for the sales you will generate.

Make sure each affiliate program has a clear and concise payment structure. A legitimate affiliate program will explain exactly what you will be paid for your efforts. That may look pretty basic, yet there are many companies who run affiliate programs that disguise or hide their pay rates. If you do not see a clear payment structure, ask them for it. If they are still not clear about it, move on to another company.

Look for programs that offer marketing support. Many affiliate programs have little or no marketing support. That is counter productive because it is in the interest of the merchant to help each affiliate succeed. many affiliate programs offer marketing training and support. Look for programs that give you the most tools and resources to succeed.
