Introduction to MySpace
MySpace fits into the Web 2.0 category because all your files and information are stored on a remote server.
MySpace was originally developed to promote bands and their music. In a very short time though, MySpace was
transformed to capture the attention of people from all walks of life. Now no matter what industry you are in,
chances are that you will find something on that topic on MySpace.
You can search for, and invite, people to be on your friends list. Once they are there, you can send them
bulletins, which are messages that go out only to those on your friends list. Bulletins are a great way
to keep in touch with your MySpace friends. When sending the bulletins, adding a link back to your
MySpace page will keep your friends coming back.
Your MySpace friends can also post comments on your page for everyone to see. Many of those comments
include pictures, which is a good way to get your message across. However, try to include a picture
or image that is not too big. I have seen some that practically take over the comments section of your
MySpace page and make it look horrible. So keep those images small enough to fit into the design of the
page you are on.
When adding comments to other MySpace pages, always add a link back to your site. Too many people
skip this step and get no results from their postings. To make the links look better, do not simply
add the link by itself. Add the link to a word, phrase or image to keep it attractive.
MySpace Tip: Let MySpace host your images that you use for linking on comment spaces.
Upload your images to your MySpace images gallery, right click on that image and copy the image location.
Then go to a comment page and add a link to that image with the target being either your MySpace page
or your web site. That way when the MySpace page you posted the comment on gets real busy, you are
using the MySpace bandwidth, not the bandwidth your website is using.
Building Your MySpace Network
There is more to just setting up a MySpace page and waiting for people to eventually find you.
To get started faster, you should go out and search for people who you want on your friends list.
When they are on your friends list, you can send them bulletins that provoke thought, tips in your
industry, updates on your business, surveys and even jokes to break free of the daily work and
laugh a little.
Finding those friends is not always fast and easy, but can be rewarding. Start by logging into your
MySpace account and clicking the Search link on the top menu. There are several types of searches and
the one you want is near the bottom, called Find a Friend.
First you choose a field in a major category such as Marketing, Publishing, etc. Once you select one
of those options, the next drop-down box will be filled with Sub-Fields to further narrow your
selections. After choosing a Sub-Field you will choose a Role: a function of the field and sub-field
that you chose above. functions can include things such as Account Executive, Online Marketing, Manager,
Agent, Marketer, Publisher, etc., depending on the Field and Sub-Fields you chose.
Next enter a keyword that you are looking for within those selections, such as real estate, networking,
graphics arts, or just about anything in your Profile, like religion, Interests & Personality, or
Background & Lifestyle. When your selections are all made, click the search button. You can update
your search any time to refine it, change fields or any aspect of your search.
Now you will be presented with lists of all MySpace users that fit your criteria. You will see very basic
information about each person such as their age, orientation, why they are here, location and the last
date their profile was updated. That date will tell you how active they are.
To the right will be some links to View their Profile, Send them a Message, Forward to a Friend,
or Add to Blog or Preferred List. You will want to first open their Profile in a new window. In
Internet Explorer, hold your Shift key while clicking the View Profile link. In Mozilla FireFox,
hold your Control (CTRL) key while clicking.
Scroll through their profile, friends list, see if they entered something in the About Me section,
and be sure to look through their Interests. If their profile appears to show that they are someone
you want to network with, look for a link on the left shortly below their photo named Add Friend, Friend,
or simply Add. Click that link and confirm that you want to add them to your list. MySpace will send
that person an email requesting approval for them to be added to your list. You will also be added
to their Friends List at the same time.
Once they approve your request to be added, you can then post a message on their page in the comments
section and send them bulletins. They will also be notified when you post articles on your MySpace Blog.
You will also receive messages from your friends too, in the form of comments, bulletins and private
messages. This is what the networking on MySpace is all about. When you start getting people on your
Friends List, feel great about it because you are now building your personal mailing list.
Making Money From MySpace
There is an eBook called MySpace Profits
That shows you the "five key power techniques to promote your business on MySpace". It is the transcript of an
interview between Jonathan Mizel and Joe Alexander.
The book is 56 pages of pure content, covering the topics in detail and is an excellent book to get and keep for reference.
