Too bad that only Duke is credited as composer. He worked closely with his arranger, co-composer Billy Strayhorn. According to David Hajdu's excellent biography, "Lush Life", they were under intense time pressure to present this suite. Both Duke and Strayhorn took turns writing the vignettes. I bet we can hear a harmonic difference between some of the pieces. Maybe the Strayhorn Foundation in Pittsburg has some definitive word on which Ellington works were actually written by Strayhorn. |
